Police officers, police yourselves

Why do I read and hear about police misconduct almost every day? Why do bias, prejudice and racism exist? The answer is not only in education, it is the lack of courage that leads to understanding and respect of others. Human rights. Why are many neighborhoods considered crime problems? Why do drugs seem to flourish? I believe police are not working to “Protect Life and Property” to their full potential. The problem is systemic, and we can look at the weak infrastructure and poor management within police departments. It is the people who are getting hurt. Police salaries are high, but the work ethic is low. Reading about the police is like reading about subversive groups across the earth. Change starts with the “self.” So grow-up and apologize, and get to work.

EV owners are victims of politics

It shouldn’t have come as a surprise to owners of electric vehicles that the Republican-dominated Georgia Legislature would stick a thumb in their eyes by eliminating the tax credit on zero-emission vehicles (“Ga.’s EV support will go from first to worst,” News, April 18). EV owners are widely perceived as city-dwelling tree-huggers who largely vote progressive, and thus are not voters Republicans aspire to for support. While the relatively insignificant amount of extra revenue gained might be welcome in the short term, the citizens of our state will be worse off in the long term. Once again, symbolically pandering to the base to get re-elected is a higher priority than doing what’s in the best interest of all Georgians.

Killings by ISIS contradict Islam

The execution of 30 Ethiopian Christians in Libya and the suicide bombing in eastern Afghanistan, killing more than 30 and injuring 125 civilians, shows ISIS , which claims to act in the name of Islam, is not following the principles of Islam, let alone that of basic human rights. Islam castigates the killing of innocent people. The Holy Quran states, “Whosoever killed a person … it shall be as if he killed all mankind.” It further condemns suicide attacks when it clearly states, “and cast not yourselves into ruin with your own hands,” and again, “And kill not your own selves.” Finally, Islam upholds freedom of conscience and religion. The head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, states, “God Almighty has left the choice of which belief to accept to be determined by the conscience of each person.” My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the victims.
