School shooting incidents — including the recent near tragedy in DeKalb County — often provoke debates about whether we can better protect students by arming teachers with guns. A guest columnist makes that recommendation today, and readers share their view on guns in schools. But a Georgia State University professor says we are failing to utilize new technologies to improve school safety, such as “laser dazzlers” that would render a would-be shooter unable to see. He says some new, non-lethal technologies being developed for the military and police to incapacitate armed assailants could also help schools.
