An old chemical factory in Brunswick responsible for contaminating the Turtle River, which feeds the Brunswick River and St. Simons Sound, is the focus of controversy. Today, a coastal environmentalist criticizes a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cleanup plan as deficient, particularly the covering of tidal marshes with a thin layer of soil. But an EPA director for the Southeast says the worst of the contamination has been removed from the site, and vows the EPA will continue to monitor the marshes to make sure the proposed remedy is working.
