A week after announcing a ban on sexually explicit material, OnlyFans has reversed course, saying it will continue to allow sex workers and others to use the platform without restrictions.

The social-media subscription service based in London made the surprising announcement Wednesday on Twitter, following widespread outrage from sex industry advocates and people who sell explicit content to their followers on the platform.

The previously announced ban on sexual content would have taken effect Oct. 1, a decision that was reached after pressure from “banking and payment services,” according to Bloomberg News.

But an abundance of sex workers who rely on the platform as a lucrative source of income expressed outrage over the company’s desire to shift to a business model that would cater mostly to mainstream celebrities.

Under the ban, the company would have still allowed some nude photos and videos, but many expressed skepticism about how the company would ultimately determine which content crossed the line.

“Thank you to everyone for making your voices heard,” the company tweeted Wednesday. “We have secured assurances necessary to support our diverse creator community and have suspended the planned October 1 policy change.”

“OnlyFans stands for inclusion and we will continue to provide a home for all creators,” the message went on to read. “An official communication to creators will be emailed shortly.”
