12-year-olds battling cancer fall in love during treatment

They are currently getting treatment at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York.

"She's had a crush on me for a while now, and I've had a crush on her, so her and me are boyfriend and girlfriend now," Lucas told WGRZ.

Nurses say they understand each other better than anyone else.

“No one really knows what a kid with cancer is going through. Not the parent, not the nurse, not a friend. The only other person that knows what a kid with cancer is going through is another kid with cancer,” said nurse Angelica Zachara.
Lucas and Stella go on dates around the hospital. They get lunch together, play board games and go for walks.

A Facebook page created to document Lucas' journey captures snapshots of their relationship. One video posted to the page shows Lucas telling Stella how much he loves her in a series of note cards.

Stella says there’s one good thing that came out of this difficult time.
“I’m so lucky,” Stella said. “Yes, I have been given all these bumps in the road, and all this yucky stuff, but if I never got that, I wouldn’t have met Lucas.”
