An emergency wedding was held at Carolinas Medical Center on Wednesday for a woman whose father is terminally ill.
Jubal Kirby has an incurable lung disease and has been in the hospital for three weeks without improvement.
Kirby’s daughter, Kaila Kirby, married Daniel Pardue at her father’s intensive care unit bedside. Hospital officials said Jubal was alert, understood what was going on and had a smile on his face throughout the ceremony.
The original wedding was set for July 16, 2016, as they knew it was just a matter of time before her father would die.
“Kaila really wanted her dad to be part of her wedding. She may not have gotten everything she imagined on her wedding day, but she got the most important part - to spend it with her dad,” Rex E. Burelson, who officiated the wedding, said.
Burelson described the ceremony as a joyous occasion.
Jubal and his wife, Collen Kirby, have two daughters. Kaila was the first to get married.
“I am happy but sad because I wanted my dad to stand beside me. He’s my best friend,” Kaila said.
