Snortable chocolate may not be everyone's cup of tea, but a Florida company is taking chocolate powder to new heights.
Legal Lean's Coko Loko chocolate powder is a combination of raw cacao laced with energy drink stimulants, B vitamins and an amino acid, and is meant to be snorted like cocaine.
On its website, the company touts the benefits of Coko Loke, saying it promotes an "elevated mood," "a steady rush of euphoric energy" and "a sense of calm focus."
Snorting cocoa, not cacao like Coko Loko, has been popular in the European club scene for about a decade now, used in drinks and pills for it's mildly euphoric and energizing effects, according to U.S. News and World Report.
Taking legal and illegal drugs through the nose means faster absorption because of the many blood vessels in the nose, USA Today reported.
"The lining of the nose is a moist mucus membrane," Dr. Steven Gold, an ear nose and throat specialist told USA Today.
“I don’t know what the effect of chocolate on it would be. Intuitively, we eat chocolate and it doesn't damage our mouth, but without studying it, how do you know what the effect is?" Gold asked. "I prefer eating chocolate – for now," he said
The product has not received FDA approval.
A 1.25-ounce container of the powder sells for $24.99 on Amazon and is also available at Walmart.
