Comedian and television personality John Oliver's takedown of Donald Trump caused a rather odd sounding hashtag to trend on Twitter.
Heard of #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain?
Here's the back story.
During the Sunday episode of "Last Week Tonight," Oliver gave Donald Trump detractors one more reason to mock him: His name.
Before delivering his one-two punch, Oliver played soundbites from supporters saying they support Trump because he "tells it like it is," he self-funds his own campaign, and tells the truth, unwavering in his opinion.
He continued to poke holes in those supporters' remarks before coming to his last point -- that even the Trump name, with all its associations to wealth and grandiosity, is not real.
"It turns out the name Trump was not always his family's name," Oliver said. "One biographer found that a prescient ancestor had changed it from, and this is true, Drumpf. If you are thinking of voting for Donald Trump, the charismatic guy promising to make America great again, stop and take a moment to imagine how you would feel if you just met guy named Donald Drumpf, a litigious serial liar with a string of broken business ventures and the support of a former Klan leader," Oliver said.
Oliver's takedown of the Trump name comes from information published in the biography, "The Trumps: Three Generations That Built An Empire," The Boston Globe reported.
The author, Gwenda Blair, wrote that Donald Trump's German ancestors changed the family name during the Thirty Years War.
Oliver concluded the show by directing his viewers to a real website, and encouraging them to weigh in on Twitter using the hashtag, #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain.
And that's just what they did.
