Authorities have identified two suspects in Wednesday's mass shooting that killed 14 people and injured 17, many of them critically, during a holiday party at a public building in San Bernardino.
A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that Syed Farook,28, was one of the suspects in the shooting. The second suspect was later identified as Tashfeen Malik, 27. Police said the pair were believed to have had a romantic relationship with one another. The Associated Press reports the pair were married and had a child together. Farook is a US citizen; Malik's legal status is not known at this time.
Both suspects are deceased.
No motive has been identified yet.
FBI Los Angeles Director David Bowdich said during a news briefing that investigators had not ruled out a terrorist attack, saying, "It is a possibility, but we don't know this yet."
Here are five things about Farook and what is known about the suspects.
1) Farook worked for the county: The Associated Press reports that Farook was an environmental specialist with the county health department who sometimes worked at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino. "His brother, who has the same first name but a different middle name, is a state employee with the same name works for the Board of Equalization as a business tax representative. He was not involved in the shooting," according to Heavy.com.
2) What's known about Farook's family: Farook's brother-in-law, Farad Khan, is married to Farook's sister. Khan said in a press conference held by the Council on American–Islamic Relations he had not spoken to Farook for a week or so. He gave his condolences to the victims and their families and said, "I have no idea why he would do that, why he would do something like this."
The Associated Press reported that Farook and Malik left their six-month-old baby with Farook's grandmother Wednesday morning.
3.) What a coworker said about Farook: Coworker Patrick Baccari said that Farook traveled to Saudi Arabia earlier this year and returned with a wife. The couple had a child together. The coworker said that Farook had grown out his beard over the last several months but did not outwardly show any unusual behavior. The coworker said that Farook left the holiday party in a rush, leaving his coat behind.
4)The investigation: Police executed a search warrant at a Redlands, California, home belonging to Farook's family. The FBI is involved in the case, searching for a motive.
5) False information reported: A second suspect in the shooting was misidentified in early reports on Twitter. The information was a hoax. The second suspect was confirmed by authorities to be Tashfeen Malik, 27.
