A video captured in Fairbanks, Alaska, shows a strange “thing” swimming in the Chena River.

The video was filmed by Fairbanks employees of the federal Bureau of Land Management.

Officials with the bureau shared what they felt was the most compelling explanation of the video so far, hypothesized by experts with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

They suggest that the video shows “frazil ice stuck to a rope that is probably caught on a bridge pier.”

Frazil crystals form in calm waters, becoming a smooth and thin form of ice, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. The center says frazil ice is sometimes referred to as grease ice for its resemblance to an oil slick.
