What to know now:
1. Video going viral: A video of a white police officer slamming a black student to the ground in a South Carolina high school has gone viral. In the video, Richland County Sheriff's Deputy Ben Fields is seen grabbing the girl out of her seat at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, S.C., flipping her and throwing her to the ground. A classmate recorded the 15-second video.
2. Cosby accuser: A woman who settled a sex-abuse lawsuit against Bill Cosby in 2005 has been reinterviewed about the incident by police in Philadelphia. The news came on the day Andrea Constand, a former employee at Temple University, filed a defamation lawsuit against the prosecutor who refused to arrest Cosby when she first accused the comedian of assault. Constand says former Montgomery County prosecutor Bruce Castor -- who is running to regain his job as prosecutor -- defamed her during his campaign. Sources say, depending on the outcome of the election, Cosby could be charged with assaulting Constand.
3. Wife's suicide: The wife of a jogger who was slashed to death on a Dallas hiking trail has apparently committed suicide. Patti Stevens, 54, was found dead in her home Sunday. Her husband, Dave Stevens, was attacked and killed on the hiking trail on Oct. 12. A former Texas A&M football player, Thomas Johnson, confessed to the murder.
4. Budget deal: House Republicans reached a budget deal with President Obama Monday night, aimed to avert a default on payment of the government's bills and a government shutdown. Outgoing Speaker of the House John Boehner, (R-Ohio), is urging House members to pass the bill.
5. Navy ship challenges China claims: A U.S. Navy ship has sailed past a disputed area near the Spratly Islands archipelago in the South China Sea in a challenge to China's claim of sovereignty in that area. The USS Lassen, a guided missile destroyer, completed the pass of the manmade island without incident. Who controls the area has been in dispute.
