Amid a crowd of protesters and media, a same-sex couple in Morehead, Kentucky have successfully applied for a marriage license.
But who are William Smith, Jr. and James Yates?
1. Smith and Yates have been together for nearly a decade, The Associated Press reported. They are the first same-sex couple in Rowan County, Kentucky to receive a marriage license.
2. Deputy clerk Brian Mason issued the license after Yates and Smith paid the $35.50 fee. He congratulated the couple, shaking their hands as he smiled, the AP reported. Mason's boss, Kim Davis has refused to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples, saying that gay marriage went against her Christian beliefs.
Davis was found in contempt of court Thursday and was sent to jail.
3. After receiving the license, Yates ran across the steps of the courthouse to hug his mother as both cried, the AP reported. They were greeted by supporters chanting, "love has won," The Courier-Journal reported.
4. Yates and Smith said they're trying to decide between two wedding dates and plan a small ceremony at a family home.
5. Friday marked the sixth attempt for Yates and Smith to get a license, The Courier-Journal reported.
