Thief caught on camera stealing $20,000 worth of items from Florida home

A thief was caught on surveillance camera stealing $20,000 worth of items from a Mandarin, Florida, home.

"And I’m not afraid, but it's kind of scary," homeowner Richard Leibowitz said.

Leibowitz gave Action News Jax surveillance video of a thief roaming through his home for nearly an hour.

"It really didn't look like he was in too much of a rush," Leibowitz said.

Leibowitz said the man got in through the back door and made off with thousands of dollars’ worth of stuff.

"A little over $20,000," Leibowitz said.

Besides three guns, a box of ammo and a suitcase, the thief stole several other items from the family.

"He took a lot of silver, bunch of jewelry that my wife accumulated during the years, some Iraqi currency," Leibowitz said.

And he left a mess in the bedroom after Leibowitz said he used a hammer to break into a locked drawer in a desk.

"You feel violated," Leibowitz said.

For 38 years, Leibowitz said his family lived in the home and nothing has happened.

Action News Jax used the Jacksonville Sheriff’s office crime map and found that in the past six months there have been 79 thefts and 12 burglaries within a mile radius of their house.

"If he wants to come back, good luck," Leibowitz said.

Leibowitz said neighbors remember seeing a motorcycle leaving the area at the time of the burglary.
