Two surfers are recovering from non-life threatening injuries after being bitten by a shark at New Smyrna Beach Sunday morning.
The two shark bites happened only 30 minutes and two miles apart of each other.
Kevin Ross, 29, of Deltona is in high spirits despite having received 30 stitches due to his injury.
“I guess I happened to catch where mullet were running and a shark thought my foot was a snack,” Ross said. “I never thought it would happen.”
Ross, who began surfing only three months ago, said he’ll have to pick up a new hobby.
“I rather stay on shore,” he said. “I'm done with the water.”
Hilton Mantooth, 15, of Maitland was rushed to Halifax Medical Center where he underwent surgery to treat his injury
“He has a tendon that's torn in his foot,” Cynthia Dades, the victim’s aunt, said. “He has to have it repaired.”
Dades said her nephew is in his sophomore year at Bishop Moore High School, where he serves as the founding president of the school’s surf club.
Dades said Mantooth has earned his stripes as club president.
A purple flag now flies above America's shark-bite capital because of the attacks.
Officials said 10 people have been bitten by sharks there this year.
