While it's hard to prove that any one food is as addictive as say, cocaine, Dr. Nicole Avena, from the Icahn School of Medicine, ranked foods based on how often survey takers described them as problematic, using the Yale Food Addiction Scale.

The results? Pizza, chocolate, chips, cookies and ice cream, unsurprisingly, took the top spots. Pizza was head and shoulders above the other four, with a score of 4.01 out of 7 on the addiction scale. No other food topped 3.75.

However, food addiction still isn't recognized by most psychologists, though binge eating disorder is. But Avena hopes studies like these will lead to more helpful diagnoses in the future.

"If someone feels they are addicted to food, there really is no diagnosis a medical doctor could give to that person,” Avena told The Huffington Post. "This study is helping advance the literature so that we can help people who have addictive-like eating disorders."
