The animals most likely to kill you aren't snakes, or dogs, or even sharks -- they're among the smallest that you will encounter.

From 2001-2013, bees, wasps, and hornets accounted for the deaths of  nearly 60 people every year. Coming in a close second were land animals like horses, pigs and deer, which  frequently collide with cars.

Christopher Ingraham of the Washington Post reports that the numbers were compiled from the CDC Wonder Database, a collection of odd and interesting facts.

Other dangerous creatures and the number of people whom they kill yearly are;

  • Dogs: 28
  • Cows: 20
  • Ants and other bugs: 9
  • Spiders: 7
  • Poisonous snakes and lizards: 6
  • Sharks, alligators, and bears: a tie, with 1 each

Ingraham says recent shark attacks like those on the East Coast keep many from entering the ocean. However, he points out that heart disease kills over 600,000 people in the U.S.S every year so a better idea is to "stop fretting about sharks and maybe worry about your Dorito habit instead."
