Many Americans will set off fireworks over Fourth of July weekend or go someplace to watch them, but the loud booms are not exciting for everyone.

“During the fourth of July, most animals are startled by loud noises, and fireworks are no exception,” said Michelle Stone Cypher, an animal control officer.

Over the weekend, many shelters expect to see their numbers increase drastically.

“Their natural reaction is to try to run away from the noise, resulting in them leaving home,” said Cypher.

Shelter employees said that owners should tag or microchip their dogs, or at the very least write their phone number on pets’ collars.

“If at all possible, bring them indoors into a safe place, even if it’s just a cool garage for the night or a crate in the bathroom, just anything to keep them away from the noise,” said Cypher.

Employees said that even soothing music can help calm pets.
