A Salvation Army of Metro Detroit spokesman told local media the anonymous donor dropped a 1980 South African gold Krugerrand into a red kettle at a Kroger in St. Clair Shores. The Salvation Army says someone has deposited a Krugerrand, worth $1,300, into a red kettle for the past six years around the same time and at the same location.

The organization says the donation money is used in many ways, including providing children with winter coats, sending children to summer day camp through The Salvation Army Outdoors program and helping children succeed academically through after-school programs.
