The online classifieds site Craigslist recently updated its safety page, suggesting users "consider making high-value exchanges at your local police station."

Despite arranging to meet in public places, in several cases potential buyers have stolen items from would-be sellers.

Last year, several Florida police departments, including those in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and Delray Beach led the way and invited the public to use their lobbies.  

"What really struck me was in some cases people were following the advice that they found online about safety, which includes meeting in a public place, being careful about having someone come with them," Boca Raton Police Chief Dan Alexander said at the time. "To a certain extent you would think that would be enough, but in reality, it's not enough."
