The National Weather Service tweeted its followers around 7 p.m. Thursday that a tornado was on the ground in the northern Illinois town of Rochelle, about 80 miles west of Chicago.

One person was killed in the nearby town of Fairdale, according to AP reports. Authorities said Friday there was not a single home in the town of about 200 people that was not affected.

Robin Biggs, an employee of a Super 8 motel in Rochelle, said she had never seen a tornado that big, or stay on the ground that long.

The tornado "took everything in its path," she said.
