Protesters in Oregon have taken a unique approach to their cause by repelling hundreds of feet from a suspension bridge over the Willamette River in an effort to literally block an outgoing Shell icebreaker.

A group rappelled from the St. John's Bridge around 2:30 am Wednesday and now are suspended by ropes below the 205 foot-high span over the river. They reportedly have enough supplies to hang for several days.

Michael Foster told The Seattle Times that he believes that the protesters are dangling low enough to effectively block the ship.

There is also concern about removing the protesters because of safety concerns.
