WSB-TV confirmed Thursday night that police were investigating a shooting on the campus of Savannah State University.
Investigators said the shooting happened at or near the student union.
School spokeswoman Loretta Heyward said a man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
An alert was also sent to students telling them to stay where they were, and the campus was put on lockdown for hours.
Sometime before midnight, traffic to and from the campus resumed, with police checking vehicles, according to local reports.
A Public Safety Department employee at the university reportedly told Reuters there was not an active shooter.
