Police in metro Kansas City, Missouri, are warning the public that fake car seats have been found in the area.
The Prairie Village Police Department posted a warning about the "extremely dangerous" car seats Wednesday to its Facebook page.
Police explained the warning signs of a fake car seat in the post.
"The seat and buckle material are flimsy and will not protect as they are supposed to," police wrote. "Real car seats have a lot of stickers and writing, mostly in English and some Spanish. All seats for use in the US will have a chest clip, whereas fake ones many times will not."
Amber Rollins, of Kids and Cars, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the safety of children around cars, told KMBC-TV she began hearing of fake car seats last year. Vehicle crashes are the No. 1 killers of children, she said, so parents should take extra care to ensure their kids are protected.
"All car seats are different so you’ve really got to pay attention,” she said. "Do your research and make sure that what you are getting is legit."
An article on Parents.com recommends parents buy car seats at a store, like Walmart or Target, as opposed to online.
