A Tulsa woman was appalled. She said she was told to stop breastfeeding her child in Kmart.
She said she's not so much angry as she is embarrassed.
Angelica Williams said she and her 3-month-old baby McKenzie are inseparable.
"We have this bond no one else can have," Williams said.
She attributes it to breastfeeding.
Williams said a Kmart employee humiliated her in front of other customers on Thursday.
"I was feeding in the checkout line and some lady had come up to me and asked me to go to the bathroom to feed the baby," Williams said.
Williams said she was fully covered.
"It kind of made me feel ashamed. But I just told her that I'm not going to feed my baby in the bathroom," she said.
By phone - FOX23 spoke with the store's manager about this.
The manager said she wasn't working when it happened so she didn't have a comment, but said she'd look into it.
We asked if this is something Kmart employees are directed to say to a breastfeeding mother. She said she didn't know because the issue has never come up.
According to Oklahoma law, women can breastfeed anywhere they have the right to be.
Williams said this isn't going to stop her from breastfeeding in public.
She said she just hopes more people become educated when it comes to one of the most natural acts of mothering.
"When moms do breastfeed they look for support," Williams said. "I don't think anyone should be ashamed of it or embarrassed."
