A truck crash Thursday proved fatal for its payload -- hundreds of hives which contained millions of bees.
The apiaries were valued at $1 million to $2 million, according to KTXL.
"It's a loss for the owners of the bees, and it's a tragedy for the hives themselves and these bees were destined to do some pollination work next spring -- fruits vegetables, nuts," beekeeper John Miller told KOVR. "It's a tragedy, it's sad."
The only humane way to contain the bees was to kill them by spraying soapy water on them, beekeeper Nathan Smith told KTXL.
The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to KTXL.
