According to The Detroit Free Press, about 120 students belonging to Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity and its sister sorority Sigma Delta Tau from the University of Michigan stayed at the Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan Jan. 17 and 18.

Resort employees said the group left behind a path of destruction including broken ceiling tiles, furniture, exit signs and doors.  They also apparently urinated on carpeting and damaged 45 rooms, resort employees claim.

Originally, the damage estimates came in at more than $85,000, campus newspaper The Michigan Daily reported.

Now Treetops general manager Barry Owens says the total cost, when you consider management's time taken to deal with the situation and damage to the resort's reputation, and adding in what the company has paid contractors and other non-specified third parties, is $430,000 and that he believes the frat will not pay it, The Detroit Free Press reported.

They have already paid $25,000 restitution, a hotel spokesperson told The Detroit Free Press.

Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity faced university punishment.

They are now not recognized as a student organization for the next four years, the most severe punishment a fraternity can receive from the university, WXYZ reported.

The Michigan Daily added that the University of Michigan has asked the national office of Sigma Alpha Mu to revoke the fraternity's chapter, and is requiring the chapter to fully pay for the damage and take part in "restorative measures" in the community.

The sorority is also suspended for two years, WDIV reported, becaue they, according to The Michigan Daily, stood by and allowed the fraternity to vandalize the resort.
