A bizarre scene at a beach in Russia startled visitors to say the least.
A huge hovercraft joined them on the beach when it made a surprise landing on the shore — unexpectedly. (Via CNN)
The 550-ton vessel, known as a Zubr, reportedly belongs to the military — it is not Vladimir Putin’s jet ski as some first thought after seeing an online video of the event.
These air-cushioned landing crafts are reportedly the largest hovercrafts in the world and are designed to sealift large assault units, like marines or tanks, transport weapons, and carry as many as 500 troops. (Via Kremlin.ru)
The craft swooped in at around 70mph. Fortunately, no one was hurt. (Via Sky News)
And apparently the hundreds of beach goers were actually trespassing on the beach, as it is owned by the government.
A spokesperson from the Defense Ministry told a local newspaper the area should have been off-limits to the public and "docking at the beach … is a normal event." (Via The Irish Times)
So next time you find yourself on a Russian beach make sure you don’t get in the way of a massive hovercraft doing military drills…
