A Utah man and his girlfriend were forced to call a taxi after they failed to steal a car because it was a stick shift.
Alexander Katz, 19, and his girlfriend hopped into the car but couldn’t figure out how to get away with it because of its manual transmission.
Though they were forced to ditch the car, they had already been spotted by the car's owner who originally thought his vehicle had been taken as a joke.
"So [the owner] and his girlfriend got in her car and were literally going to the brother's house to see if he had taken it as a prank," Logan police Chief Gary Jensen explains, "while they're on the way to the brother's house, they see the car being driven by someone they clearly don't recognize and it's at that point they realize this is actually an auto theft."
Police found the car theft couple waiting outside a nearby convenience store for their cab.
The female, a minor, was arrested immediately while Katz took off on foot.
The Providence man didn't elude police for long though, after he was tracked down using details he left with the taxi company.
Humorously, though Katz didn't know how to work the car he was trying to steal, his girlfriend did know how to drive a stick shift and was trying to give him direction while he struggled.
"I'm not 100 percent certain why she doesn't just get around and get in the driver's seat so they can take the car and use it," Jensen added.
The 19-year-old was booked on suspicion of receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle, a second-degree felony, and failure to stop at the command of law enforcement.
