A 47-year-old man was bitten several times by a shark shortly before noon Friday while swimming about a mile north of a fishing pier in Avon, N.C.

The swimmer was injured in the right leg and lower back and was treated at the beach by an ambulance crew, then transported by ambulance and air to a hospital, according to a a news release from the National Park Service Outer Banks Group.
A witness says the man was bitten on the lower back, buttocks and ankle while trying to get his children out of the water.
