Last week, a customer found a skimming device and camera at a BB&T ATM in Charlotte, N.C. He turned the two items over to police and warned people on Facebook.  Now the U.S. Secret Service is involved.

Another Charlotte-area woman said she was victimized by a skimming device at a different BB&T ATM.

The woman, who preferred not to give her name, said the thieves stole $1,000 from her account. Her bank refunded the money, but she's worried about other customers.

While many banks, including BB&T, use high-security tools to combat scammers, it's still important to keep an eye on your account.

"BB&T employs sophisticated layered fraud tools to monitor our card accounts and take every appropriate action to protect our clients from fraud," said BB&T Vice President of Corporate Communications, David White. "BB&T takes this situation very seriously…As always, we encourage our clients to monitor their accounts and report any suspicious transactions immediately."

Typically, criminals put a device over the card slot to steal the information off your card. They also position a camera so it can capture your PIN. So here's how to protect yourself according to WSOC:

  1. Inspect the card slot. Even grab it and shake it a little. Be suspicious is it's crooked or loose.
  2. When you type your PIN, shield it with your other hand, so a camera can't see.
  3. Be especially cautious in tourist areas.
  4. Avoid outside ATMs when possible.
  5. Always keep an eye on your accounts.
