Homeless student elected prom queen, graduates two years early

A Washington, D.C. teenager is showing how you can succeed if you put your mind to it, no matter the roadblocks.

Destyni Tyree recently graduated from high school. She's only 16 years old and graduated in two years with a 4.0 grade point average, WRC reported.

She's also a cheerleader and was chosen prom queen.

Destyni also grew up in a homeless shelter with her family.

Despite having all the cards stacked against her, as many would say, how did she become so successful at such a young age?

Destyni took her regular classes, online classes, summer school and Saturday school so she could graduate ahead of schedule, the principal of Roosevelt S.T.A.Y. High School said.

The school is an alternative school in Washington, D.C.

She also worked while attending school, WRC reported.

Destyni said living in the shelter gave her the drive she needed to be successful.

"I don't want to live in a shelter when I get older," Destyni told WRC. "I want to better my life, so that gave me the drive to do what I want to do."

Potomac State University in West Virginia has accepted her for admission in the fall and granted her a scholarship. She plans to study secondary education and eventually become a principal and own her own charter school.

She's working, trying to save money to pay for the items her scholarship doesn't cover, like books.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up.
