“The northern lights are just absolutely mesmerizing and beautiful. They are kind of hard to describe sometimes but when it’s dark at night, I come alive,” Salat told Great Big Story.

The aurora borealis -- the "northern lights" -- is a region of charged gases in the ionosphere, a region around 50 miles above the Earth's surface. The gases give off light that varies in color from green to orange to red depending on the type of gas being excited by the charged solar particles.
