In a Friday morning press conference, Baltimore City State's Attorney General Marilyn J. Mosby said that Freddie Gray's death while in police custody has been ruled a homicide, and that there is probable cause to file charges against the police officers involved in the case.
All six police officers have been charged, with one officer charged with 2nd-degree murder.
The Baltimore Sun posted the names of the officers charged:
Officer Caesar Goodson Jr., 45, who was the driver of a police van that carried Gray through the streets of Baltimore, was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, second-degree assault, two vehicular manslaughter charges and misconduct in office.
Officer William Porter, 25, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and misconduct in office.
Lt. Brian Rice, 41, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and misconduct in office.
Sgt. Alicia White, 30, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and misconduct in office.
Officer Edward Nero, 29, was charged with second-degree assault and misconduct in office.
Officer Garrett Miller, 26, was charged with second-degree assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment.
Mosby says the officers failed to get Gray medical help even though he requested it repeatedly after he was arrested April 12. She called his arrest illegal.
Warrants have been issued for their arrests, according to Mosby. All of the officers have been taken into custody.
Billy Murphy, the Gray family attorney, said during a press conference that today has given the Gray family "measured hope" but to be "mindful this is a first step, not the last." Murphy went on to say that there is a need for a new culture of policing that honors good policing and punishes bad policing.
Meanwhile, the Baltimore police officers union asked Mosby to appoint a special independent prosecutor for the Freddie Gray death investigation. Mosby has denied that request, according to the Associated Press.
The police union issued a statement of support for the officers, saying they aren't responsible for Freddie Gray's death, and were diligent in the case. The police union also stated that the charges against the officers are a rush to judgment.
Freddie Gray's death has sparked protests across the country. After making eye contact with a police officer and running from the officer, Gray was found with a knife, which is legal, according to Mosby. He was taken into police custody and placed in a police van. At some point, he suffered a mysterious spinal injury and died a week later.
