A former Pro Bowl offensive lineman for the Oakland Raiders was arrested this week on charges of repeatedly punching a woman and her daughter in the head.
Barret Glen Robbins, who battled mental-health issues throughout his career, randomly chose the women for the attacks, which were reported Monday evening at a Best Western hotel, police said.
The women, visiting from New York, said Robbins struck them multiple times. He offered them no explanation for his actions, according to investigators' probable-cause affidavit.
Robbins, who is 42 and whom the affidavit said lives in Delray Beach, is being held without bond at the Palm Beach County Jail. He told a police officer at the scene that he did not want to speak with him, the affidavit said.
Robbins played center for the Raiders from 1995 to 2003, starting 105 of the 121 games in which he played, and made the Pro Bowl and the NFL's All-Pro team in 2002. He was reported missing for most of the day before the 2003 Super Bowl, apparently after failing to take medication prescribed to him for depression.
He was left off the roster for the Jan. 26, 2003, game, which the Raiders lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48-21.
Robbins also might have struck a person at a shopping center south of the hotel before hitting the women, the affidavit said. Police were first called to the store after a report of an assault, but a witness did not want to speak with them and no other victims came forward.
