One Florida couple wasn’t going to lose their phone full of photos of their 10-month-old child to an alligator that easily, so naturally, they had to tussle with the animal.
Laciey D'Agostino, 21, and Anthony Larrimore, 24, of Cape Coral, were out for a walk on Saturday afternoon in Fort Myers when they spotted an alligator and began taking pictures using D'Agostino's iPhone, the Fort Myers News-Press reports. When Larrimore attempted to turn on Facebook live, he dropped the phone, and it fell in the water next to the gator.
Larrimore told the News-Press that he could see the phone and thought he could reach it using a stick, but as the phone moved so did the alligator. "I just kept thinking about the pictures on there and I couldn't leave without it," D’Agostino said.
A crowd gathered around the couple and offered tips or tried to distract the alligator. D’Agostino said the gator began to make a hissing noise that she “didn’t even know gators could make that noise.”
"I think (the alligator) was just being aggressive," she told the News-Press. "It seemed like he wanted to get a bite out of my boyfriend's arm. He was trying to lure him in, to put his arm at the right angle."
Finally, Larrimore decided to go after the phone by lying down on the boardwalk and quickly scooping it up. He succeeded, but with a small catch. "It does not turn on. Go figure,” he said.
Disney has been in the news related to gators recently after a 2-year-old was dragged into the water by the animal, but the company has responded by calling the incident an anomaly and cutting any reptile jokes in their rides. As for big gators, one was seen walking along a Florida golf course a few months back.
