Florida's Attorney General had filed an emergency petition to keep the state's ban on gay marriage on the books past the beginning of the year.
Pam Bondi's office filed the request with the U.S. Supreme Court, The Associated Press reported.
Her move comes after a federal appeals court in Atlanta refused to keep a ruling on hold that declared Florida's gay marriage ban unconstitutional. Refusing to delay the ruling brought same-sex weddings one step closer to reality in Florida.
The Associated Press reported Florida voters approved the ban amendment in 2008, but judges in four Florida counties have overturned the ban.
Despite the rulings in those counties, officials have still have not issued marriage licenses since Bondi has appealed each case.
