A mother and her 2-month-old son escaped from a burning home Thursday thanks to the quick actions of two neighbors.

Joseph Lay said he and his father, a former firefighter, were returning home from work when they noticed heavy smoke coming from their neighbors' home.

"I said, 'Oh, Lord the house is on fire,'" Lay said. "My father and I kicked in the door in and I could see the flames in the kitchen."

April Carver said that sound was enough to wake the young mother, who said she had fallen asleep.

"I woke up and saw smoke everywhere," Carver said. "I grabbed my son, rolled him in the blanket and ran." The young mother and her baby escaped from the burning home unharmed.

Lay said he and his father grabbed fire extinguishers and put out the flames in the kitchen, but not before the fire had already spread to the attic. The fire department responded and put out the rest of the blaze.

"We just wish we could have gotten there a little sooner," said Lay.

Carver said her neighbors got there just in time. The young mother said she was waiting for a bottle to heat in boiling water on the stove when she accidentally dozed off. The plastic bottle melted and caught fire.

Carver's boyfriend and their oldest son were not home at the time.

The family lost most, if not all, of their belongings in the fire. They do not have insurance.
