A volunteer firefighter injured in a two-vehicle accident Thursday received a surprise welcome home from his fellow volunteers.

Ricky Tallent’s friends and colleagues built a wheelchair ramp for him while he was in the hospital having surgery for serious injuries. With the gesture, they let him know they would be here to help him through his recovery.

His girlfriend invited a reporter and camera crew to the homecoming a couple of days after he was in a serious accident returning home from work.

The firefighter's friends helped rescue him from his overturned truck after he was hit by a car that crossed the center line. The condition of the driver of the other vehicle remains unknown. Tallent was released from the hospital Saturday afternoon. He has a broken foot and arm and will have to undergo more surgery.

“I’m just thankful to be alive,” Tallent said. “I’ve seen a lot of other wrecks that’s (involve) more damage than mine (where) people have not lived and I’m grateful. I’m alive and here.”

Doctors told him it will take a minimum of three months to recover, he said.
