Etsy employees just won the war for parental leave.
The crafter-made retail website just announced it will offer new parents 26 weeks of paid leave after a child arrives.
It doesn't matter if the child was born to the parent or adopted. It also doesn't matter if the employee is a man or a woman when it comes to the six-month leave.
The leave is 26 weeks total, but breaks down to eight weeks immediately following the arrival, and 18 more spread out over two years, The Atlantic reported.
Etsy had given what the company considered primary caregivers 12 paid weeks of leave. Secondary parents had five paid weeks.
Many thought that the primary caregiver was a female role and secondary was a male role. There was no definition set as to whom a primary or secondary parent was.
"Male employees read the policy and thought, 'I must only be eligible for secondary,'" Juliet Gorman, Etsy's director of culture and engagement told The Huffington Post.
Netflix, Spotify and Facebook recently offered men and women the same paid leave.
Netflix went as far as offering unlimited time off over the first year, The Atlantic reported.
The country has no set paid leave policy, but does set 12 weeks of unpaid leave regardless of gender.
