The international hacktivist group Anonymous sent a curious tweet yesterday at 11:45 p.m. ET in which it wondered aloud if there'd be a disruption today on Wall Street.
Twelve hours later, trading on the New York Stock Exchange was abruptly halted.
The US Department of Homeland Security and the US Securities and Exchange Commission released statements indicating the disruption was the result of a computer glitch and not an act of terrorism. The NYSE also says the stoppage was due to an internal glitch and not a coordinated cyberattack.
Just a few hours before the NYSE stoppage, United Airlines suffered a computer-related system shutdown, causing a nationwide groundstop. The Wall Street Journal also was inaccessible for a brief period.
