U.S. Intelligence is warning of chatter of a possible attack in three states by al-Qaeda the day before voters head to the polls on Election Day.

Sources have told CBS News that joint terrorism task forces have been alerted that al-Qaeda could be planning attacks in New York, Texas and Virginia on Monday.

No specific locations were mentioned, only the states.

It is not unusual that potential threats increase leading up to big national events and holidays.

"The counterterrorism and homeland security communities remain vigilant and well-postured to defend against attacks here in the United States," an unnamed senior FBI official told CBS News.

The FBI and other federal, state and local law enforcement are working together with the intelligence departments to find and stop terrorist threats, the official said.

The New York Police Department and the FBI are assessing the credibility of the information about the potential attack, The Associated Press reported.

NYPD says the information "lacks specificity."
