A call from a concerned citizen led to police learning that a 4-year-old girl may have been left outside in freezing temperatures, according to reports.
Investigators said the temperature was 3 degrees, but it felt like below 9.
According to reports, the little girl was not wearing a coat.
"Punishing a child by putting them outside in single digit temperatures is obviously not OK," Officer Aaron Machtemes said. "So we are trying to determine if that's what happened."
According to the caller, the little girl was put in time out in the cold weather for screaming in class.
Police do not know how long the girl was outside, but said she did not need medical attention. They are talking to the child's parents and day care staff to better understand what happened.
"It all depends on circumstances of how out of control the child was," Machtemes said. "Why the child was taken outside in the first place. How long the child was outside. All those factors would go into whether or not there is a criminal charge."
The State Department of Human Services says it is investigating the matter but will not give details because of privacy laws until the investigation is over.
