Tate Ramadan, 21, of Nashville, Tennessee, died at a YMCA pool in Sarasota after lifeguards could not revive him when he went into distress.

Ramadan was with family members at the pool Saturday when he died.

"Tate had been swimming laps in the pool for some time and I was told he had swam approximately 4,000 yards before practicing his underwater swimming techniques," according to Officer Douglas Stidham. "It is believed he was likely attempting to complete a '100' which is four laps across the pool without surfacing for air."

When his sister and cousin noticed Ramadan was no longer moving under the water, they flagged lifeguards.

Ramadan was a competitive swimmer and diver for Dartmouth during his freshman and sophomore years. He expected to graduate in 2017.
