Two killed in mining accident

Two workers were killed and 20 others were injured Sunday in a mining accident near the southwestern Colorado town of Ouray. The Ouray County sheriff’s office was called to the Revenue Virginius mine about 7:20 a.m., county spokeswoman Marti Whitmore said. The miners were trapped underground and were confirmed dead Sunday afternoon. Star Mine Operations, LLC, the owner of the mine, couldn’t immediately be reached for comment, but Whitmore said the company has accounted for all workers at the site. She said 20 people were taken to hospitals, and all but two have been treated and released. The conditions of the two hospitalized workers was not available.

Eight bodies found in Juarez

Investigators found the bodies of eight people Sunday at a home in Ciudad Juarez and said the dead were believed to be related. The victims were found bound and appeared to have been stabbed to death, Chihuahua state prosecutors said. Prosecution spokesman Arturo Sandoval said the bodies apparently were members of the same extended family. He said exact ages were not available but three of the dead appeared to be children and five were adults. Juarez is across the border from El Paso, Texas.

Child found cuffed to porch

A social worker was arrested after a foster child was found cuffed by the ankle to the social worker’s front porch with a dead chicken hanging from the boy’s neck. Wanda Sue Larson and Dorian Lee Harper were arrested Friday after a sheriff’s deputy found the shivering 11-year-old. Larson is a supervisor with Union County Department of Social Services. The couple, both 57, adopted four children and were serving as foster parents to the boy. The couple are in jail awaiting a court appearance set for today. The children, ages 8 to 14, were removed from the home.

Ship in port after drone accident

A Navy guided missile cruiser hit by a malfunctioning drone during a training exercise is back in San Diego, where investigators will assess the damage and determine what went wrong. Two sailors were treated for minor burns after the USS Chancellorsville was struck by the drone during radar testing Saturday afternoon, off Point Mugu in Southern California. Lt. Lenaya Rotklein of the U.S. Third Fleet said Sunday that the target drone hit the ship’s port side. She said investigators at Naval Base San Diego are assessing the damage and determining why the drone malfunctioned.

Women protest rape comments

Women dressed in miniskirts mobilized outside a Bogota nightspot Sunday to protest comments by its owner that a woman’s high hemline may have contributed to her alleged sexual assault. Protester Marcela Clavijo said, “A woman has the right to show her body the way she wants to.” She was one of about 20 women who joined the protest outside Andres Carne de Res. Restaurant owner Andres Jaramillo drew intense criticism after a radio interview last week in which he questioned whether a 20-year-old woman was raped in the restaurant’s parking lot and commented on the woman’s attire. Police are investigating. No arrests have been made.

Militia attacks spark strike in capital

Residents of Tripoli launched a general strike Sunday and held protests, demanding the city’s powerful militias be disbanded after violence that killed nearly 50 people over the weekend. Tripoli residents are seething with anger over the violence that erupted Friday, particularly directed at powerful militias from the western city of Misrata operating in the capital. The violence broke out when thousands of protesters marched on a neighborhood controlled by a number of powerful Misrata militias, prompting some militiamen to open fire, killing 43 people. A day later, another militia attempted to overrun a military base, resulting in a clash with government forces that left four dead.
