A 7-year-old boy who was shot last month in Dorchester while riding his bike is now an honorary member of the police force.

Divan Silva was shot in broad daylight on Sunday, May 24 while he was riding his bike on the sidewalk near 296 Bowdoin St. He was taken to Boston Children's Hospital and stayed there for several days while he was treated for his injury.

"He's afraid to stand outside for even two seconds. He's doesn't want to stand outside. He's afraid it might happen to him again," said Divan's mother Dijanira DeAndrade.

On Sunday, members of the Boston Police Department held a ceremony at a Dorchester restaurant where they honored Divan "for his tremendous bravery and courage," and also named him an honorary junior police officer.

Officer Agnaldo Monteiro helped organize the event. He was drawn to the case after seeing surveillance video showing Divan getting shot.

"I watched that and it broke my soul. It was an emotion thing and I couldn't get it out of my mind. Even sleeping I was thinking about it," Officer Monteiro said.

He was thinking about the 57 seconds Divan lay on the sidewalk, with no one helping him.

"That gentleman that was looking at him. He couldn't step over and embrace that child, comfort him?"

Police are still seeking the person responsible for shooting Divan, and have released some information about the suspect and a car seen in the area around the time of the shooting.

"We owe no allegiance to anyone that would commit an act of violence and have a seven year old be the victim. So the "stop snitching" culture? Forget about it," said Boston Police Superintendent in Chief William Gross.
