The Woodstock City Council Monday night gave final approval to the city’s Highway 92 Corridor Livable Centers Initiative plan.

Months in the making, the blueprint seeks to remake the Ga. 92 corridor between Interstate 575 and Stonecroft Lane, currently a jumble of commercial and office uses that some have decried as ugly and outdated.

The final plan is a 25-year look-ahead that envisions an overlay zoning district to guide substantial redevelopment. The plan includes an expansion of walking trails, additional parkland development, more trees, improvements to sidewalks and intersections along Ga. 92 and streetscape improvements.

It also calls for better connectivity between existing retail and office areas, with a view to easing traffic along the main road. It also foresees higher-density development with a view to introducing future transit, including high-density residential and mixed-use projects.

City planners have said that the aim is to create a more inviting gateway to downtown.
