The DeKalb County Commission introduced a change to local law Tuesday that by next month could clear approval of a new union for some workers.

The 450-member sanitation department has been pushing since last November to be recognized as part of Teamsters Local 728, primarily over concerns about pay and safety issues.

Commissioners have long said they would consider a union, as long as dues were collected outside the county’s payroll system. With that issue resolved, the commission is expected to vote on recognizing the union in September.
