The Union City Police Department has applied for a series of grants to supplement the city’s budget for public safety necessities. Four grants were applied for, two of which are offered by the U.S. Department of Justice, for body cameras and laptop computers.
The first grant was applied for earlier this month, for $36,022.50 on a matching basis for which the city would provide the same amount for a total of cost of $72,045. The department intends to supply each sworn officer with a body camera to enhance transparency for encounters with the public. The other federal grant for $16,731 is to purchase laptop computers to replace outdated and damaged equipment.
Two other grants were applied for through the Office of Community Oriented Policing. The largest is a hiring grant in the sum of $115,866 which is a matching grant that the city would be responsible for 25 percent of the officer’s salaries. Union City seeks three additional officers under the grant. The department also applied for the Cops Development Grant for $30,039, a non-matching grant for community youth projects to foster a better relationship between law enforcement and youth.
