The twin roundabouts at the interchange of Riverside Drive and Interstate 285 in Sandy Springs are open for traffic, the Georgia Department of Transportation said.

The roundabouts, at the exit and entrance ramps from Riverside to the interstate, opened this weekend after about seven months of work. Riverside previously had one lane in both directions with no turn lanes, and with traffic signals at the ramps. Back-ups caused by vehicles queued up to turn left were frequent.

With the new configuration, two lanes feed into the roundabout. One lane is used to enter the traffic circle, and the other is a right-turn lane. There are no left turns across oncoming traffic.

Some work remains, including paving and pavement markings, the roundabout island, lighting, sidewalks and landscaping, a GDOT spokeswoman said. The $5.6 million project is to be completed in November. Baldwin Paving Co. Inc. and Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering are GDOT’s the design-build team for the project.
