“You kind of caught me off guard. I really don’t know what to say.”

Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens told our reporters he was stumped when they asked him what the state can do for people who can't afford their car insurance.

That's an issue, of course, because Georgia last year had the highest increases in the nation for personal auto insurance premiums. Again.

The trouble is, our $120,000-a-year insurance chief should know the answer to that question. So we can move that into the apparently tall column of stuff Hudgens doesn't know about his job.

One thing is painfully certain: Last year, increases in car insurance rates here were more than twice the national average. Georgia was first or second in the nation on insurance premium increases for the past three years in a row. Finally, Georgia is No. 1 in something.
